Did You Know, The Great Escape – Animal Version! Would you believe that some
animals are well-known cunning escape artists? While most of us are dreaming
about vacations to exotic locations, some animals have mastered the ability to
remain uncontained unless the facilities are impregnable. Here are a few
jailbreakers of the animal kingdom.
The Orangutan Ocean: Orangutans are considered part of the top echelon of intelligent primates worldwide, with problem-solving skills rivalling human ingenuity. Back in 2009, an orangutan named Judy at the Singapore Zoo broke out four times! With a calculated move, she outwitted the keepers using sticks to unlock latches and even constructed a rope from shredded leaves to swing herself to freedom.
The Penguin Paddle Sure penguins look pretty goofy when they are waddling around on land, but in the water, they are really graceful swimmers. In 2012, a Humboldt penguin named Carlos masterminded a daring escape from Edinburgh Zoo in Scotland. He managed to actually climb over a perimeter wall, and paraded through city streets before being caught and safely returned to his enclosure—no doubt a little worse for wear from his adventure in the big city.
Even the sneakiest of critters can be escapees in training. So into the waiting arms of fate, a corn snake slipped out of its terrarium back in 2019 here in Texas, at a reptile expo. He evaded capture for a few days before a vigilant worker at the expo found him curled up under a vending table. Houdini's great escape is a reminder that even those small, innocent animals—one would deem harmless—can surely pull off some fantastic disguises and become as sneak as they come.
